Our Story

Setting up…
Villa Kitty Bali was founded by myself, Elizabeth Suttie (Henzell), and was started in 2009 as the ‘Cats and Kittens section’ at BAWA. A very dear friend who wants to remain anonymous and I paid the wages, bought the cages and other necessary equipment, food and medication to care for the cats and kittens whilst at their BAWA home.

Kadek Purnata and Wayan ‘Jopi’ Budiarta were the very first vet assistants at this time and worked tirelessly to give these rescued animals the attention they so needed.

In October 2010,a generous Melbourne lady and fellow cat lover Rosemary Fry came to BAWA and saw the work we were doing. Realising we needed help, she agreed to pay for the building of Villa Kitty and a number of other necessities that would help to make Villa Kitty the beautiful shelter for cats that it is today.

Our anonymous doner generously covered the lease of the land for ten years and has also pledged to continue his support.

Villa Kitty Bali itself was established on March 17th, 2011, when we picked up our ever-growing family and relocated to paradise. This beautiful house, purpose built to shelter and care for Bali’s cats and kittens is now a place of peace and joy that we’re really proud of.

Our purrfect family…
We have 12 staff in our Villa Kitty family. Our two senior vets and one junior vet work from 8am to 8pm. Five dedicated vet nurses cover 24 hours a day, while our cook, cleaner, gardener and smiley security guard are never far away. We also ‘job share’, so there are always at least two qualified people at Villa Kitty at any one time.

Today, our three vets are working round the clock to care for even more of Bali’s needy cats and kittens. Drh Karnata is a senior vet who has been working with Drh Soeharsono, one of Indonesia’s leading vets, in Denpasar for the past 10 years. Drh Isa has also worked with Drh Soeharsono.

Our junior vet, Drh Herli also acts as our dedicated Villa Kitty Bali manager.

Our five vet assistants are Kadek and Jopi, Bli Ketut, Ketut Kecil (little). Our new vet assistant in training is Komang.

Nyoman and Wayan share the gardening and the security positions.

We have a fabulous cook, Mbk Eka, and she and her assistant Ibu Made not only cook for the cats and kittens every day, but cook a delicious Balinese feast every Sunday for the Villa Kitty family and our friends and supporters.
