Boris and the Booze Ban

Pretty good start Boris. No howlers, well none bad enough to have reached front page news so far. And the first policy statement is to ban booze on public transport.

A few years ago I would have found this totally outrageous and a huge infringement of my civil liberties but now I welcome any initiative that seeks to prevent another innocent teenager being stabbed for glancing in the wrong direction.

Gangs have always existed but never have their territorial, aggressive behaviour been under as much scrutiny as now. It is easy to look the other way and walk on past, after all there are plenty of examples of people who have stepped in to their ultimate cost.

I hope Boris' first high-profile step is the first of many in a battle to make the streets safer throughout London.

It was pretty amazing that Boris managed to beat Ken in the London Mayoral Election – if only on the basis that Ken has attained an iconic status with Londoners.

There wasn’t much I liked Ken for, but the Congestion Charge was one of them, as it has clearly improved the air quality in a notoriously dirty city. However, Ken was also responsible for the way it currently operates which isn’t exactly fair as I found out to my cost the other day:- you can’t check whether or not you have incurred a charge and if you do pay incorrectly, you can’t get your money back.

Although I am notoriously bad with my analogies, I wonder what Ken would have to say if his Credit Card company started fining him for going over his limit, only he couldn’t check what his balance was, and any money he paid thinking he owed it but didn’t, wouldn’t be returned to him but went to make the bank a better place….

There is of course no need to drink on public transport! I also think displays of affection and even acknowledging another person should be banned. The tube is a sacrosanct place to read the paper in peace and quiet devoid of drunken youths and socially minded busy bodies.
