Or 'Facebook is shit', or 'Destroy Facebook'. I can't recall, as I glanced at the open grid schedule and raced so as not to miss the first session. A lot of level-headed roundtable discussion were everyone contributed. Issues of privacy were considered in relation to different perspectives between New Media types and less experienced content suppliers. Someone suggested that an understanding of internet history, of the earlier flame wars, taught important lessons of netiquette that less web-savvy users may not be so aware to observe. This found its way through to chat about archive positioning and the note that some job application processes are also accompanied by credit checks online.

Do Social networking sites want to be open to the trust that goes with API keys? Certainly, activity streams aggregated from ten sites  (eg. FriendFeed, Yahoo Pipes) are talking to Facebook. In chatting after the session, I mention I found Yahoo Pipes much more complex than expected, it can be properly used however and there are a good number of how-to videos. Reprecussions of actions through connections occurr, 'Do I want my friendships kept secret?' or 'Do I want this person to know that I'm friends with this person in this network?' When two people talk to one another through the web, a whole set of norms, rules, standards and practices come into play.

- Open Social ID I was told, exists because Google didn't get the openid concept until it was already prevalent.
- Internet migrations from usenet to livejournal, to Facebook and other SNS
One of the problems with Facebook was that its difficult to get out of: friends are there, and difficult to move around and migrate to another site. Early Facebook was compelling on aggregation. The marketing acumen kept peopple sucked in to some extent, although its possible to do an end-run around them. A few examples were mentioned,

Laconi.ca : friending people on different sites.
Identi.ca : open-source Twitter. Friending people on different services, syndicated.

The California Internet Identity Workshop was mentioned. Heres a link.

The issue of personal information and spam was suggested as leading to a trend were people were going back to sterile technology
Friend Of A Friend (FOAF) The creation of profile and control but not what sould be done with it. I'm sure I heard it associated in description with triples or was that tribbles? FOAF was an experiment that came from 6 Degrees of Separation... an open version of LinkedIn.

Also worth mentioning,
A session on openid was also running around this time. Aidan Skinner has documented these here
and someone plugged the Social Media Camp in London which is held on Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April at Wallacespace St Pancras. Tickets are now available. Barely!\

This blog entry is part of a series based on my notes from the OxfordApacheBarcamp sessions, user-generated conferences held at The University Club, 4th-5th April. More details can be found on this wiki, Twitter feed at #barcampoxford and lots of places.
