Benifits of Worry to Smokers Quitting but Don't Let Worry Become the ProblemPosted by Desmond Sherlock |
A 2007 study in the Journal of Cognition and Emotion revealed that smokers may be more convinced to quit if they worry about the risks of smoking. Resulting in the author suggesting strategies such as having doctors reminding smokers about the down side of smoking.
However, over worry can become detrimental to solving the problem. Michel Dugas, a psychologist at Concordia Uni in Montreal likes to think of worry as a bell curve, where moderate levels are associated with improved functioning, but excess levels of worry are associated with a decline in performance.
AKA, some advertising on TV reminding smokers of the dangers of smoking may be useful but bombarding them with such negative stimulus does not mean that you will get the same effect.
And as usual, any feedback much appreciated.
