I believe that a lot of smokers are now ready to quit (Approx. 50% tried to quit
in the last year according to stats) but they need encouragement & support rather
being threatened. Getting employers, smokers, and workmates to
participate in challenge events such as they run in Canada (Driven to Quit)
is a more productive & less alienating of the smokers.
We are running a pilot challenge event in May this year at Melbourne Docklands called
the Quitmay Challenge & also are hoping to run another in October called
the Quitober Challenge. Both are focused on getting the employer to support
& sponsor their staff to quit over the month & then go on to quit altogether.
To date we have been un able to get any support from Quit or any government
agencies citing their focus being on scaring smokers using expensive TV ads.
Not very new or innovative to us. Link to Article
