Description
With the MacBook Air, Apple has created the world's thinnest laptop - its anodized aluminum enclosure measuring 0.76 inches thick overall. The MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which provides a multithreaded architecture for improved multitasking performance. This model has a 64 GB solid-state drive, which has no moving parts for faster response and increased durability. Other features include 2 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity via 802.11a/b/g/n standards, a micro-DVI video output (with included adapters), and up to a 5-hour battery life. It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which adds over 300 new features including easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter, and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

As can be expected form Apple, it’s a great piece of design but its bigger than (and doesn’t have mobile broadband like) the more expensive Sony TZ ultraportable 11.1” laptop, which means that you are going to have to spend your life rooting around for Wi-Fi hot spots.

Apple has also compromised in other areas of connectivity: the MacBook Air only has one USB port and doesn't include FireWire or Ethernet. It also doesn't include a built-in CD/DVD optical drive which will be a major drawback for some, although it does have the ability to wirelessly "borrow" another system's optical drive. It also doesn’t have a media-card reader or an expansion card slot.

The standard 13-inch MacBook is cheaper and faster, but bigger and heavier, whilst the Sony TZ series is smaller with mobile broadband, but more expensive – so your choice is going to depend on your needs and your budget.
