Is everything on your website free?

What does your free online Address Book do?

Our free online Address Book enables you to be easily found and contacted within 3 clicks of a Google search of your name, without revealing your contact details.

People contacting you don’t have to be registered, so sending you a message is really easy for them to do. Any messages sent to you go through our email gateway and are forwarded on to your email address, so you don’t even have to come to the website to retrieve them.

If you’d like to watch a video of how if works, you can see one here or you can read more about it on the Site Functionality page.

Why would I want to be easily found via a Google search of my name?

There are many reasons why you might want to be found online. Here are a few:-

  • Everyone’s has lost touch with old friends – make it easy for them to find you.
  • Many people have got relatives they have lost touch with – make it easy for them to find you.
  • It’s a means of friends contacting you without needing your email address (or even their own email account from which to send you a message). If you frequently change your email address and you want friends to be able to find you, this will probably be an extremely useful service for you.
  • Some people might want to be contacted by people doing genealogy research so that they can find out more about their family history.
  • You can give people a means of contacting you easily without handing out your email address (perhaps you’re in a rush or you don’t want them to have your details) - you can tell people to find you on Google via a search of your name – from there they can find your WWB Profile and send you a message.

Won’t being in an online Address Book affect my privacy?

Not really. The only information that you would have to make public is your name, your nationality and your gender. That’s it. We hide your email address and anyone contacting you does so through our email gateway.

What information should I provide so that I can be identified as being me?

We recommend that you provide enough information that enables you to be distinguished from anyone else that might share the same name. Sometimes your name, gender and nationality will be all that is necessary, but in other cases you might want to provide the name of the town that you live in or near to as well – or something that people who know you will recognise, like your interests or the industry you work in.

Some people are naturally more comfortable with providing more of their contact information publically than others.

I want people to be able to see all my contact information – is that possible?

No problem. Your Profile page is a ready made web page that enables you to store all of your contact information (including telephone numbers, email addresses, your websites and social media pages) all on one simple page which has your name in the url address (i.e. the url address looks like which is highly optimized for being found by search engines.

You can also hide your information using your Privacy Settings so no one else can see it unless you grant them access to it.

Do you cater for businesses?

Yes we do. Simply register with your real name and fill out the business sections in the registration form.

If you are a small business, what we essentially offer you is your own free webpage where you can promote your business on the web and make it easier for customers to find you and your website, if you have one.

We have a “do follow” policy for the links on our Profile pages, so your actual business website will get a natural boost in the search engine ranking, from being listed on our website.

How long does it take to register?

Less than a minute.

What is a Profile in the Address Book?

Your Profile page is simply a page in the Address Book which contains as little or as much of your contact information as you want it to. You could show as little as your name, gender and nationality (See Short Profile or Full Profile).

How do I update the information on my Profile?

When you sign in, you will be taken to your Profile page. At the top of your Profile page, click on the link that says “Update Profile”.

Can I leave and delete my Profile and all my information whenever I want?

Yes. Absolutely. Simply sign in and go to “Update Profile” at the top of your Profile page, where you’ll find a “Delete Me” button. It should take you less than 10 seconds.

Be careful – when its gone, its all gone! We keep no records.

Can I create a Profile in your Address Book without being registered?

No. Sorry.

You say I can be found and contacted within 3 clicks of a Google search of my name. How?

The person searching for you will Google your name. They will normally find your Profile page on the first page of the search engine results. Then:-

  • Firstly, they click on your Profile page (in Google’s results).
  • Secondly, they click on the “Send a Message” button and write their message.
  • Thirdly, they click send.

It’s that simple!

My Profile does not appear on Page 1 of Google’s search results. Why?

There are several reasons why this can happen:

  • Firstly, your Profile might not yet have been indexed (recorded) by Google. This usually happens within 2-7 days of your registration on our site.
  • You share your name with a famous person which would mean that the competition for a high position in the search engine results is strong.
  • You have a very common name (same as famous above).
  • Finally, Google often moves its search results around – check the position of your Profile after a week or so.

Position in the search engine results depends on 3 main factors – the website the page is on (we usually rank well for names), secondly time – the older the page, the higher it can rank, and thirdly, the amount of links pointing to that page. If you want to improve the position of your Profile yourself, simply link to it from other websites (this may take a few weeks to take effect).

If you have not appeared in the first couple of pages within a month, please let us know. We can take action to improve your placing (again, this may take a few weeks to take effect).

How long does it take before I can be found via a Google search of my name?

Once people register with us, it normally takes between 2 days and a week for our new Profiles to be indexed by Google. Thereafter you should appear in their search results and be able to be found on a search of your name.

How do I view my Profile as other people would see it coming from a Google Search?

If you want to view your Profile as others see it on a search, just go to your Profile page, ensuring that you are not signed in.

You can find your Profile page address (url) by signing in and looking at the address bar whilst on your Profile page. Your Profile url will be something like Then sign out and paste the url into the address bar.

Can I have more than one Profile?

No. Sorry. There really shouldn’t be more than one of you and, if you really believe there is, please report the issue as soon as possible to your family doctor. Anyone creating more than one Profile might have one or all of them deleted by our administrator (so please don’t waste their time).

Why can I alter all my Profile information except for my name and age?

We need to freeze your name because we incorporate it into your Profile’s url (page address) as part of the page’s search engine optimization (ie to rank you higher in the results on Google). Obviously allowing people to change their name would make a nonsense of this system and devalue how we appear to the search engines.

We need to freeze your age, because we require you to be over 18 to use our service. This is not because our service is particularly adult focused, but because as an online business we feel that we are unable at the moment to meet the special online legal needs required for those under 18 in every global jurisdiction.

If you need to change your name from one real name to another (eg. some people might want to only use their maiden name) you will need to delete your existing Profile and register again with your new details.

What should I do if someone I don’t know “requests to connect” with me?

Never connect with people you do not know or do not trust (sometimes known as “friending”. Just click the “ignore” button on the “Manage My Connections” page which you will find the link to at the top of your Profile page, once you have signed in.

If you accept a connection request and you have set your privacy settings to friends only, they will be able to see your contact details like your email address.

Some people request connections from people they do not know because this is a common feature of social networking websites. We are not a social network and this behaviour is not appropriate here.

I am not receiving emails from you. Where do I change my Notification settings?

To change how you receive emails from us, simply sign in, which will take you to your Profile page. Then click on “Update Profile” at the top of your Profile Page. Then click on the Notifications tab.

How do I change my Privacy Settings for my Profile?

You can find these easily via the “Update Profile” link at the top of your Profile page when you are signed in. These can obviously only apply to information in your Address Book Profile.

If you create a Button and opt out of our Address Book, these will not be applicable.

If you create a Button and do not register, these will not be applicable.

Why are you different from a social network?

We are very different from a social network for two important reasons:

  • Social networks are walled gardens – anyone wanting to contact you on a social network has to be registered on that network – which is a pretty big barrier between you and them. Most people don’t like being coerced into joining websites which is why we don’t. Old friends wanting to send you a message can do so in seconds, without being registered.
  • We operate as a simple Address Book. We are not a social network. You won’t be bombarded with “friend’s requests” from people you don’t know or nudged or asked if you want to integrate 400 apps into your Profile.

One of your Members has a link to a spammy website on their Profile. What should I do?

We would be grateful if you could report any abuse here – Report Abuse (this reporting link is also on the bottom of every page). We will check the website concerned and delete the whole Profile, if appropriate.

  7. That’s it!

How do I change my password (when I haven’t lost new current one)?

  1. Sign In.
  2. On your Profile page, click the “Update Profile” link at the top of the page.
  3. Enter your new password twice where it says Password and Verify Password.
  4. Click Save at the bottom of the page.
  5. That’s it!

How does the mail delivery system work?

Someone clicks on the “Send a Message” button on your Profile page and they write you a message. The message is then checked by our spam filter and forwarded on to your usual email address. A copy of the message is also sent to your WWB Inbox, which you can find on your Profile when you are signed in.

Please ensure that you add our site to your safe list with your usual email provider. Otherwise the messages we forward onto you might end up in your normal email provider’s spam folder, which you might not check regularly.

Do you collect e-mail addresses when an email is sent via your message system?

Definitely not. We don’t collect e-mails addresses and, unless required to by law, we never will. For more information, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

People’s privacy is our highest priority.

Do you have a Spam Filter?

Yes, we have a very powerful Spam Filter. All messages sent to you from your profile are filtered and any spam we detect is deleted, so you shouldn’t get any at all.

Contact Button users can opt in and out of the Spam Filter if they are registered members (See Button FAQ’s). The Spam Filter is not available to unregistered Button users.

Will WWB spam me or use my email address?

No. We will never release your email address to a third party (although, of course, you yourself can choose to show it publicly on your profile if you want to do that).

If you allow us to, we might send you a newsletter with important website updates up to 4 times a year. We don’t send out newsletters lightly and over our first year of operation we actually didn’t send out any.

You can even opt out of the newsletter altogether either when you register or after you have signed in – simply go to “Notifications” under “Update Profile” at the top of your Profile page.

Is the Contact Button separate from the Address Book?

Yes it is. The Contact Button and Address Book operate completely separately from each other. You can have one without the other.

What is the Contact Button?

See the Button FAQ’s for any Button queries.

What does your Free People Search do?

Our Free People Search enables you carry out real time searches of people’s names and provides you with a summary of information found on the web for people with this name.

Our proprietary search algorithm extracts and collates this information and content in real time from a wide range of publically available sources like Google, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Blogger, Digg, Twitter, YouTube, Typepad, Twitter and Wikipedia, amongst others.

Why is this better than Googling someone? Because we are a specialist people search engine, we provide highly filtered results specifically aimed at people to reduce the amount of “clutter” you normally get in the broader results of mainstream search engines. We also aggregate information, so you can see immediately which networks people are on – for instance, this Barack Obama search tells you immediately he is on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to name but a few.

How does your online people tracing service work?

Read all about it in Site Functionality.

You can find it here - Trace Lost Friends and Relatives

I have found the person I was trying to Trace. How do I delete the Trace notice I issued for them?

Just sign in and click on Trace Lost Friends and Relatives at the bottom of any page. Then look for the person in the A-Z directory on that page – they will be filed under their surname. Next to the persons name you will see a little red icon – if you click that, your Trace notice will be deleted.

Although the Trace notice will be deleted immediately from our site, please note that your Trace notice will still show in Google’s (and Yahoo’s etc) Search Engine results for a short time, because of the way they index and record information on the web.

What is Search Alert?

Search Alert can notify you when someone has Googled your name – see how it works here - Search Alert.

Search Alert - How can I tell if I have been Googled?

We will send you an email. If you don’t want these emails, you can turn them off in your “Notification” settings.

You can also see if you have any Search Alerts when you are signed in. The number of alerts will be shown in your Message Centre on the left hand side of your Profile Page. If the counter reads “0” (zero) you have either not been Googled at all or you have marked as “cleared” the ones you have already seen.

Search Alert - Can it tell me the name of the person who has Googled me?

No it cannot. What it can do is:-

  • It can tell you the name of the business or organization you have been searched from in most cases. Businesses and organizations tend to use fixed IP addresses, so we should be able not only to give you their name but their exact location.
  • It can give you the geographical location of the person who has Googled you – from which you might be able to guess who it is. We extract this geographical information from the searchers IP address. Although Geographical accuracy can be very high for domestic IP users, it can depend on the individual telecoms operator of that IP address. This location is displayed on an interactive Google map, so you can zoom in and out of the location.
  • It can give you the IP address of the person Googling you. If the person is at a domestic address, these IP addresses can change if people turn their internet hubs on and off because IP addresses issued to domestic customers tend to be shared in a pool (they are called “Rotating IP” addresses). This system was developed by the internet authorities to make the most efficient use of IP ranges.
  • It can tell you the amount of times you have been Googled from a particular location. The Search Alert system stores this information in a table along with the time and date of each alert, so you can keep a record of each incident.
  • It can tell you which search engine (it might be Yahoo or Bing, rather than Google) and the keywords used to find your Profile page.

To read exactly how Search Alert works and who would find it useful, please read the Site Functionality page.

Search Alert – Can it tell me the name of the business or organisation Googling me?

Yes it probably can. The names of most businesses and organisations are publicly associated with IP addresses, so we are able to tell you which of them have been searching for you. You should be able to see if a business you have applied to work at, your existing employer or even organizations like your local hospital have Googled you.

I have seen something on your site that concerns me. What should I do?

If you have seen anything that concerns you, please report it here – Report Abuse.

We will take anything you say extremely seriously and if you provide your name and email address, we will do our best to respond within 24 hours.

Why are you called WikiWorldBook?

We prefixed our name with the Wiki designation because it has become a metaphor for mass collaboration – and we are truly global in our reach with most nationalities now represented on the site.

An open-edit wiki directory for business listings will be introduced later on this year.

Are you a registered company?

Yes we are. WikiWorldBook was registered as a company in 2007. You can find out more about us on the Our Company page.

How does WWB use the information I give it?

We store it and display what you ask us to according to how you set your Privacy Settings, which give you total control of all your information. We never share your personal information with third parties (unless specifically required to by law as any business is compelled to do). See our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

How do you make money?

100% of our revenue is from displaying advertising on our site. We try to do this in an unobtrusive manner as possible.
